Sea Chest & Overboard Blanking
Sea chest valves, intake lines and overboard discharge valves are essential parts of a vessel’s seawater and discharge systems. Over time, valves located inside the engine room may become worn, seized or unable to provide reliable isolation, making maintenance or replacement difficult while the vessel remains afloat.
Our divers provide underwater blanking services for commercial vessels and yachts to create a controlled external seal before internal valve maintenance or replacement is carried out. Depending on the vessel’s requirements, blanking can be applied directly to individual intake openings inside the sea chest, across the complete sea chest cover, or to selected overboard discharge outlets.
A Controlled Approach To Underwater Blanking
Before the operation, the sea chest, intake openings, gratings, overboard outlets and surrounding hull area are assessed to determine the most suitable blanking method. Where individual intake points need to be isolated, our divers can install blanks directly over the required openings inside the sea chest.
If broader isolation is preferred, the complete sea chest opening or cover area can be blanked externally. Overboard discharge outlets can also be sealed when required, allowing the vessel’s technical team to work on the associated internal valves and piping systems under safer and more controlled conditions.
Once the external opening has been securely isolated, the vessel can proceed with maintenance or replacement of defective internal valves without relying solely on the existing valve for watertight isolation. After the internal work is completed and the system is confirmed ready for service, the underwater blanking arrangement can be removed.
